Animal Registration Information
Dog and Cat Registration Notes
• The registration period for dog and cats runs from 1 November to 31 October each year. The expiry date of registration is shown on the front of the form and can also be found on your dog or cats registration tag.
• First time one year registrations received on or after 1 June each year are subject to a 50% concession on the registration fees.
• All dogs aged three months and over must be microchipped and registered. All cats aged six months and over must be sterilised, microchipped and registered. A penalty of $200 may apply. The animal’s microchipping number is required with the application and will be added to the City’s data base.
• Dogs and cats must at all times wear a current registration tag attached to their collar, with dogs also wearing a tag bearing the owner's name and current address. This will help Rangers reunite you with
your dog or cat should it become lost.
• It is important to remember to notify the City of Armadale of any change of address, ownership, or if your
dog or the cat is deceased within 28 days. No refund will be provided if you rehome your animal, they become lost or deceased.
Dangerous Dogs
The Dog Act 1976 provides for three categories of dangerous dogs: dangerous dog (restricted breed), dangerous dog (declared) and commercial security dog. The following conditions apply to all three categories:
• Registrations for dangerous dogs will only be renewed annually under the Dog Act 1976 section 15.3A.
• Requirement for dog to wear a special identifying collar, be muzzled, on a lead and under the control of an adult capable of controlling the dog when in public (except when a commercial security dog is
working).
• The dog must be confined in an enclosure that is constructed to prevent the dog from escaping, from being released or removed by another person without the owner's permission, and to prevent a child less than seven years old from entering or inserting part of their body. Warning signs must be displayed at every entrance.
Restricted Dog Breeds
Under the Dog Act 1976 the following dogs are classified as Restricted Dog Breeds:
• Pit Bull Terrier breeds or American Pit Bull Terriers, Fila Brasileiro (Brazilian fighting dog), Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino (Argentinian fighting dog) and Perro de presa Canario.
• All restricted breeds must be microchipped, sterilised and cannot be bought, sold or transferred except in the circumstances mentioned in subsection 33GC(4)(a) or (b) of the Dog Act 1976. Proof of sterilisation and microchipping is required with the Application for Certificate of Animal Registration.
